Product Review: Phantom 2.0 Luminous Tec Spool (45m)

As a technical diver, a spool is a critical piece of safety and deployment gear, whether it's used for shooting a DSMB, making jumps, or acting as a guideline. I recently received the new Phantom 2.0 from Orcatorch, featuring 45m of fluorescent line, and took it underwater to see how it performs in real conditions. Here is my honest, detailed review.

Unboxing & First Impressions

The spool arrives in a cardboard box, securely nested inside a protective foam insert alongside its double-ended boltsnap.

While this isn't the most eco-friendly packaging choice for a diving accessory, I have to admit it is highly effective at ensuring the product arrives in pristine, flawless condition after shipping.

Both the spool and the boltsnap feature a sleek, black anodized finish. Not only does this offer excellent protection against oxidation and corrosion in harsh marine environments, but it also gives the entire setup a modern, premium look. The action on the boltsnap is incredibly smooth with zero stiffness, ensuring effortless handling right out of the box.

Line Quality & High Visibility

The line itself is thin but feels remarkably strong. The standout feature here is its bright white color (photo 2A) and its ability to glow in the dark (photo 2B).

Because the line is fully luminescent, locating it in low-visibility environments or pitch-black conditions becomes significantly easier. This is a massive safety plus for technical and dark-water diving.

Design & Cold-Water Ergonomics

Orcatorch clearly paid attention to the finer details during manufacturing. The end of the line is well-protected by heat-shrink tubing, and the large terminal loop is reinforced with heavy-duty stitching. This loop is wide enough to easily pass the entire spool through it, making it compatible with large surface marker buoys—including my own 1.8m, 23L DSMB.

One of the best design choices is the integrated rotating center ring. This ring allows the line to pay out effortlessly during deployment and completely eliminates the risk of pinching a finger when shooting a bag. If you dive with thick drysuit gloves, this feature is an absolute game-changer.

It also adds a layer of safety for divers managing heavy equipment loads like stages, deco bottles, or camera rigs. Furthermore, an integrated swivel prevents the line from twisting, which simplifies the re-spooling process afterward.

Construction & Personal Tweaks

The build quality of the spool itself is outstanding. CNC-machined from solid aluminum, it features numerous holes around the rim, making it incredibly easy to clip off the boltsnap securely at any point.

If I had to find one minor drawback, it's that the spool comes packed with a bit more line than I personally prefer, which can make clipping the boltsnap a little tight initially. However, I much prefer having too much line than not enough. It only takes a minute to trim the excess line to match your personal preference and lock in the perfect tension.

Conclusion

The Phantom 2.0 LUMINOUS diving reel is an extremely well-constructed, robust piece of equipment. Despite adding moving parts with the central rotating ring, the design remains elegantly simple and reliable. The craftsmanship matches the standards of the industry's leading technical diving brands. It has quickly earned a permanent spot in my gear configuration, and I can highly recommend it to any diver looking for a high-quality, high-visibility spool.
